Databases have been one of the success stories of computing. This course introduces the background and nature of databases, it describes when they are an appropriate solution, and it surveys some the products that are available. The core of course concerns the basics of how databases work, how they are used and how they are designed. There is also an Advanced and Modern Databases course, which is the natural successor to this course.
The course lasts two days. Each day will start at 09.30 and finish at 16.30. The delivery is via lecture, exercise and discussion.
The days consist of two morning sessions and three, shorter afternoon sessions, with one hour for lunch. Time will be available after 16.30 for extended discussions or related issues.
The course is for users and potential users of database systems. The course would also be suitable for people developing simple databases.
We recommend that there are no more than 12 participants, with the best results usually obtained when there are at least 8 participants. It is possible, by negotiation and mutual agreement, for more than 12 participants to be present.
